At the Sea of Galilee

After Jesus had shown Himself to the disciples, they left Jerusalem and went to Galilee, where Jesus had told them He would meet them.

While some of the disciples were at the Sea of Galilee (Tiberias), Peter said, “I’m going out to fish.”

The others replied, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out in a boat, but that night, they caught nothing!

As the sun rose, Jesus stood on the shore and called out to them, “Friends, have you caught any fish?”

“No!” they shouted. The disciples didn’t realize that it was Jesus standing on the shore.

“Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will catch some,” Jesus called.

So they threw out their net. This time, they couldn’t pull it in because of the many fish they had caught. John said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Peter heard that it was the Lord, he jumped into the water and made his way to shore.

What important lessons had the disciples learned?

From the time Jesus first called Peter and the others to follow Him, they had learned much from His teaching and the example He set. This experience of catching so many fish taught them that:

Without Jesus, our own efforts may not bring the results we hope for.
When we listen to Jesus and obey Him, we can see how He works in our lives.
God knows what we need and is able to provide for us.
When we help each other, we can share in the blessings God gives us.

Jesus showed the disciples that spiritual truths are practical and can guide our choices and the way we live.
