Numbers 9:15-23

The pillar of cloud and fire

The cloud that covered the Tent of the Lord was a sign to the Israelites that the Lord was with them. At night, the cloud looked like a fire above the Tent.

The Israelites stayed where they were and did not move as long as the cloud stayed over the Tent. But when the cloud lifted and started moving, the Israelites followed it. And wherever the cloud stopped, the Israelites set up their camp.

Sometimes the cloud stayed over the Tent for only a day or two, and sometimes it stayed for a whole year or even longer.

How does the Lord guide us?

The cloud of God’s presence showed the Israelites when to walk, when to stop, and where to go. During the day, the cloud shaded and guided them, and at night, it was like a big fire that led them.

The Israelites at least had a cloud to show them the way, but how can we know which way God wants us to go when we face a hard decision and don’t know what to do?

When you faithfully follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit who lives inside you guides you and shows you the way to go. He puts good thoughts in your mind and may remind you of a verse or story from the Bible. He lets your heart feel peaceful when you obey Him, and He makes your conscience feel uneasy when you are going the wrong way.

Trusting only your feelings can sometimes be confusing. That’s why God gave us the Bible as a bright light to guide us when the path ahead seems dark and unclear.

Verse for today

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
